چکیده

Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environments, in particular environments where students share external representations, are discussed as an interesting area to applications of cognitive load theory (CLT). CSCL environments share a number of characteristics that will induce considerable cognitive load. This article reflects on characteristics of CSCL environments and external representations and the research opportunities they offer to CLT. We argue that CLT can contribute to our understanding of CSCL by pinpointing situations in which high levels of cognitive load are generated. CLT also raises a number of particular issues: from a CLT point of view studying of worked out external representations may lead to better learning outcomes than (co)-construction which is the standard mode of operation in CSCL. The ontology and specificity of the representational scheme used are crucial factors, since they define what can be expressed and how much room for interpretation is left in the representation. CLT may help identify mismatches between representational schemes and execution of (sub)tasks. CLT has lead to a number of recommendations on the integration of diagrammatic and textual information. We relate this to discussion and chat facilities in CSCL and describe how these can be more firmly anchored in the external representation.

External representation of argumentation in CSCL and the management of cognitive load

An architecture for intelligent CSCL argumentation systems

Argumentation is a key research area within CSCL. Yet, while many empirical studies investigating the educational benefits of various forms of collaborative argumentation have been conducted, there has not been much work done towards developing generic and reusable software architectures for collaborative argumentation that have the potential to reduce the development time for argumentation lea...

Intuitive moderation styles and beliefs of teachers in CSCL-based argumentation

CSCL learning environments provide new contexts for discussions and are thought to provide new opportunities for learning. At the same time, such environments often do not provide guidance on how to act during the discussion. The purpose of this paper is to initiate research on moderation in synchronous discussions in a CSCL environment. The first study contrasts teachers' beliefs on good discu...

Analyzing CSCL-mediated science argumentation: how different methods matter

Research on argumentation has increased our understanding of knowledge construction, group learning, and scaffolding structures in CSCL although analyses of argumentation pose many difficulties. This could be due to the many theoretical positions that can be taken when approaching discourse data. In this paper, we use three popular analytic methods (interactional, content-specific, and linguist...

CSCL argumentation systems: how do empirical results and emerging technologies inform system development?

Workshop Content Many CSCL systems at least implicitly relate to argumentation since they allow students to learn and construct knowledge collaboratively. There has been considerable effort in developing and assessing educational technology to support argumentation within the CSCL community. Many of these efforts have been shown to be effective for specific argumentation domains. At the same ti...
